Jericho

These field trips just kept getting better and better.

We were able to see the oldest city in the world….JERICHO. We saw where archeologists believe the exact walls of Jericho fell down. The exact walls are in the bottom left corner. (Hence why we are shouting in the picture.)

Above is Herod's Palace, and if you can see in the middle background another mound of dirt. This was his Hippodrome (event stadium). Below is our walk from "Jericho to Jerusalem." This is the area where the Good Samaritan story took place.

It's Turkey Time

For those of you who slept through geography class, here is Turkey. It's just north of Israel. We took a crazy flight out of Tel-Aviv. After about four 30 minute lines I will never complain about any other airport. Dad's 2 hr early rule is not even enough time to get to your flight on time here. PS IF YOU CLICK ON THE PICTURES THEY ENLARGE SO YOU CAN SEE THEM BETTER
These are just some highlights of the next few days. We went to tons of sights (about 5 every day) but there is no room nor time to mention them all, so once I die, you can read all about them in my journal.
We went to the Blue Mosque (AKA Sultan Ahmet Mosque). Incredibly beautiful. I have never seen anything so detailed and massive. (Little did I know we would be seeing lots of these places throughout the week though). In all of these mosques we had to cover our arms, legs and hair as most of you know. You can see the details in these pictures, but notice how the lights hang low with candles, the carpet has lines in it, so the Muslims can face Mecca in a line while praying. The columns were about the width of a car or bigger. I haven't seen anything like this before.
We then headed to a place called the Topkapi Palace. This is where the Sultans lived for 400 years Pretty sweet place. There are multiple courtyards and different things in each. For example, there are multiple exhibitions, one including some items from Muhammed, one has an 86 karet diamond ring, another has the armor the sultans used. They had interesting helmets, shields, and MASSIVE swords. They were about 6 feet long, no joke. We were wondering how someone hold hat, let alone fight with it. It was crazy. After the Topkapi palace we headed off to the Basicilca Cistern. It was very cool. It was underground and HUGE. There are 336 columns holding it up and they would fill this with water for the Tokapi palace. This is the picture below.
After lunch we went to the Bizarre. One of the biggest malls in the middle east. IT is MASSIVE. They everything imaginable there. T-shirts, pottery, leather purses, wedding dresses etc (I found out where I am getting my dress). After the Bizarre we took about a 2hr boat ride across the Bospherus. It was magnificent. Feeling the breeze, learning about all different palaces and seeing about 30 Turkish flags. lol They are very patriotic here. The next day we visited ANZAC in Gallipoli and then Troy. Later we just had some free time at the beach so we got to swim in the Dardenelles (the finger that connects the sea of Maramara with the Agean Sea). It was a beautiful night. On the bus we also got to get some Vishne, which is a drink that famous here in Turkey. It tastes like a sour cherry pop kind of.
We woke up and drove to Assos. It was a beautiful place. I loved it. This is where Paul came by foot while the rest traveled around the Pennisula by boat. This was on of my favorite places by far. I could see on this point for days on end. Behind me you can see an island, this is Lepos, Greece. Crazy how close we were to there and also to Athens where many other biblical stories occurred.
After Assos we headed to Pergamon. Huge theater, cisterns, beautiful temples. Another spectacular view. Afterwards we had a very yummy dinner. Just so ya know typical Turkish food consist of a 5 course meal every time. lol We were stuffed after every meal. You started off with bread and lentil soup, which I LOVED. The salad typically had sourcrout, carrots and some greens, but no dressing. The meats were odd to be honest. I never had a good serving of it and I could never tell where it came from. Roasted stuffed peppers, rice, tomato sauce and chickpeas were very common as well. And the dessert was always a pastry soaked in sugar water. Very interesting but you could feel the big plump on your stomach after eating it.
We then went to Ephesus. What a HUGE city. Was not expecting it to be this big. Hey if you have gotten all the way to this place and are still reading everything, do me a favor. Look at the pictures in your scriptures and find Ephesus, and then look at me in this picture!!! One cool experience we have had at a lot of places is singing hymns. This has been my favorite as I am sure a lot of you know. But it is so powerful how one song can bring so many peoples attention. It was cool to see our tour guide in Turkey, Yasemin, listen to us and here what we were singing. I loved watching her eyes light up, and her smile glow while we were not only singing but as our professors would talk about incredible things that ocured at these sties. So cool. After Ehesus we headed to Miletus, where Paul gave his last speech to his people before he left. The next day we went to Sardis, incredible gymnasium and pool area. Then we went to Thyatira, where Lydi is from. Such great devotionals at all of these places. I have come to grow such a great love for my professors for the words they have said and the knowledge they have. After Thyatira, we went to the Grand Mosque in Bursa. And then also to the Silk Market in Bursa as well. We got some Stretchy Ice Cream here which was very different but still delicious!!!
And our very last day in Turkey was fabulous way to end. We went to Iznik (Nicea) where the Nicean Creed was. And afterwards, we headed to Instanbul on another ferry ride. Last but most definitely not least, we were able to see the Hagia Sophia. This was even more spectacular than the Blue Mosque. I wish I could take you there in person. These pictures do not even begin to describe the beauty or the size. It was built in 1453 by Justinian and is now just a museum for people. Sad that its just a place to visit and not worship, because it is one incredible building.
This was one long but incredible trip. Seeing these places and studying about the events, its indescribable. Sitting on top of mountains, in mosques, in theaters built thousands of years ago has softened my heart. I have felt the spirit in so many different places and seen the Lords creation of this earth in so many different ways. There is no question or doubt in my mind that he created this earth, and he created it for us to live.

PICTURE TIME!

We were able to go up to Hebrew University just up the hill from the JC so I was able to post some more pictures. ENJOY. (The first one is at a Bedouin Weaving place and the second one is the beautiful view we get for dinner every night - the old city is just off to the left and the last is just a picture of my roommates and I at the center with the Old City behind us.)

Day 13 - NEGEV

Spending the day in Negev was hot and sweaty, but rewarding. Negev means South. It is the southern part of Israel. We first stopped at Tel-Sheva just across from the modern city Ber-sheva. (From in the scriptures when we here Dan to Ber-sheba a lot - just meaning the boarder of Israel again.)Lots of scriptural events happened here for example this is where Abraham received the revelation to go sacrifice Isaac. We then went to Arad. Here we saw some more Tel's (these are big mounds of dirt it looks like, however cities would just continue to build on top of the previous settlements for various reasons.) Here we were also able to see various forms of temples and noticed different things that occured in these temples. In the end we sung High on a Mountain Top and Brother Judd (our Old Testament teacher) gave a great devotional. He mentioned that we do not have to rely on others to believe in God. We don't need to be basing our decisions on those things we find that were in the past, but rather read the revelation and listen to the inspiration we have been given today. Connect with your heavenly father for the truths of this restored gospel.
So these two pictures are a Tel and then of the Dead Sea (we only got to drive by it today, but we will get to swim later!)

Mediterranean Sea

Sundays are a typical free day, so we all decided to head to the Tel-aviv Beach. Tel-Aviv where we flew into when we first arrived in Israel. It sits right on the coast and looks off into the Mediterranean Sea. I swam in the Mediterranean Sea. SO AMAZING! I loved it. We just hung out all day, getting burnt, making the JC in the sand, taking pictures etc! We got to rent bikes and ride them around the city and along the coast! So wonderful. We also got to go to a little market and bought instruments for our Saturday night music Jams! It was successful day and we are ready to start a new adventure tomorrow in NEGEV!

Last night we were able to visit the Western Wall. A place where I have come to love the Jews. They have so much devotion to their religion and don't care if anyone else watches or judges them. I am surprised at how different their services are here, except here people respect it and come to love it. Today we were able to visit the Garden Tomb as a group. We were able to sing hymns with everyone and a girl even brought her violin to play. SO SO SO beautiful. We have a very musically talented group which I love. There is so much music constantly going in our group. It was cool to not only feel the spirit here, but knowing that so many others were feeling the spirit as well, who didn't even know us, who didn't even know who we were. It has not necessarily been the place that has been my favorite, but the experiences their, whether it be joyous, reverent, crazy fun or peaceful.

Meeting People Right and Left

So far this week we went to class, studied a bit, went to some more class, ate some food, studied, went to class etc etc. But really the weeks are long, but the weekends are great fun, so it is soooo worth the hard work and wait. Well I believe I have already mentioned this, but the people here in the city and in the center are INCREDIBLE. Yes we are at that point where talk a ton because we dont know each other well enough, but it is great. I love them. There is so many musically talented people who sing and play beautifully. I am so grateful to be a part of this group and to meet these people. They have already influenced and inspired me a ton. I hope to be able to share stories of these outstanding people soon.

What will you look for?

Mondays are the typical Field Trip Day, so that was what we spent out time doing today! We went to so many different places, mostly viewpoints to be able to see the city. from all different angles. First off we were able to go to the Agustus Victoria church. So beautiful. The pictures don't even begin to describe the beauty. It was named after the Emperor's wife at the time. We then headed to the Bethlehem overlook. A favorite spot so far. So great to be able to see the paths that everyone was taking and to be able to see the cities. This is actually the picture here. Just beyond me on the ridge is Bethlehem. it was beautiful to be there and sing hymns. We went to a few other places, and at the last sight Brother Judd (our Old Testament teacher) mentioned some great things in the devotional. He was talking about our goal here. What we want to find here. He testified very powerfully that God will rescue us while we are here and bless us with so many things if we desire to have them and are searching for them. If we dont search for them, than we will just be having fun and playing. We can get so much more out of this that is long lasting though. Line of the Day "What will you look for?" Brother Judd

Love for the People

Today I was first able to see and find the love for the people here. Not only in the city but also in the center. I have not felt that way this past week and I now love it so much. I love being able to talk to people. I have been worried about this since I got here and my prayer was answered. I was able to listen, not talk but just listen and get others to talk which I LOVE.

Aoya

Today was the first Sabbath since arriving in Jerusalem. Such a powerful spirit is here in Jerusalem. Such an amazing thing that the same way you feel the spirit in the US is the same way you feel it half way across the world. As we walked up to the Orson Hyde Garden, a family of Muslims stopped us and talked with us. We were so happy they approached us because the leaders here scared us, especially girls to talk with anybody here. However we were able to get to know them better and we hope to be able to talk with them further and learn more about their culture and particular lives.
